Post tryout information

All team assignments are final and coaches have been placed. Have a great GBA season!

1. Following tryouts, there will be a short period to complete evaluations and form teams or squads.  No parent(s)/coach(s) are allowed to evaluate their own child(s) tryout.

2. 3rd grade teams.  There will be one team made up of the top 8-10 players based on tryout evaluations.  All remaining 3rd grade players are divided into equal teams according to tryout evaluations.

3. 4th and 5th grade teams are divided into A, B, C, etc. teams according to tryout evaluations and previous coach evaluations.

4. 6th through 8th grade teams will each consist of maximum 2 squads (40 player maximum per grade consisting of 20 players/squad). Squads are formed according to tryout evaluations and previous coach evaluations. These squads are further evaluated in the fall at which time the final team rosters are formed. Squad 1 will become the A and B teams and Squad 2 will become the C and D teams.

5. You will be notified via an email of your child's team/squad assignment. A date will be published to accept or decline your child's roster spot. If you choose to accept, the GBA website will take you through a process that will complete your registration. Full payment will be due at that time.

6.  Refunds are only given due to medical reasons or if player moves to another school.  Refunds for any other reason will be at GBA discretion.  Also, there are no refunds in the fall for 6-8th grade players once final rosters come out.  If you accept the squad they have been selected to after tryouts, then you are affirming to accept the team they are eventually placed on after final tryouts next fall.  For example, if you accept your son/daughter being placed on squad 1 and next fall they end up on B team...there is no refund for backing out because they were not placed on the A team.

7.  Cost for the GBA Competitive program (including Hoffman’s Hoops Academy skills sessions) for 2018-2019 season will be available prior to the open of tryout registration.

8. If you are interested in coaching your child's team, please volunteer during the registration process, or contact Matt Rose ([email protected]) with your request. Volunteering to coach does not guarantee you a coaching position.

9. Depending upon coach availability, our goal is to use paid, non-parent coaches for the A and B teams at the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade levels. Due to their limited availability, a paid, non-parent coach is not guaranteed for any of these teams.

10. GBA policy states that all children must play with their grade. No playing up. We will be checking to make sure everyone complies with this policy.

11. If you have any questions, please contact us at: [email protected]

General Tryout Information

GBA Competitive Team Selection Process, Goals, and Guidelines
These guidelines establish a uniform process and criteria to assure the Gretna Basketball Association Competitive Boys and Girls program provides each player with a fair and equal opportunity to demonstrate his/her ability. These guidelines are also intended to promote the integrity of the selection process for each team. Every effort is made to place boys/girls where they are in the best position to be successful, where they can become part of a team, and where they can grow as a player.

2017-2018 Competitive Pricing

Pricing will be unchanged from the 2017-2018 season and is as follows for 2018-2019:

3rd/4th Grade Boys and Girls:  $265
5th Grade Boys and Girls:        $300
6th Grade Boys and Girls:        $420
7th Grade Boys and Girls:        $440
8th Grade Boys and Grils:        $450

GBA Competitive Teams and Hoffman Hoops Academy
Exclusive to the GBA Competitive Program: Skills sessions dedicated to develop individual and team skills.

All teams will have their designated weekly team practice at a Gretna public school gym. In addition, 3rd-5th grade teams will meet once every other week at Hoffman Hoops Academy. 6th-8th grade teams will meet once every week at Hoffman Hoops Academy. Hoffman Hoops Sessions will consist of individual development of their shooting, ball-handling, passing, and defensive skills. Team skills and small side games will be included to connect the dots between skill development and on-court performance.

Tryout Participation Requirement
Please register your attendance prior to your tryout date. A player must attend Gretna Public Schools or live in the Gretna school district to participate in the GBA competitive program. Players will tryout for the grade level they will be in during the 2018-2019 school year. No player is allowed to play up or down any grade level from that which they will be in during the 2018-2019 school year. Participation in the GBA Fundamental fall and winter sessions is optional for all 3rd-6th grade GBA Competitive players.

If your child cannot attend tryouts but would still like to be considered for a team they must still register to tryout and also email [email protected] to let us know they will not be attending at the designated time. In these situations, the following procedures will be followed by the selection committee in an effort to place absent players appropriately:
*Prior year coaches evaluation will be reviewed and consulted along with coaches and others familiar with the excused player to obtain perspective of the player's basketball abilities compared to others at the same grade level.

Tryout Dates and Times
Tryouts will be held March 17th for the 2018-2019 3rd through 5th graders, and March 18th for the 2018-2019 6th through 8th graders at the Gretna High School. Players must arrive 15 minutes prior to their scheduled tryout time to check-in and receive their tryout number. Players who participated in the competitive program in the past may not wear their competitive uniforms (jersey or shorts) to tryouts.

Tryout Guidelines
Players will be assessed on their individual and team skills at tryouts. Individual skills include, but are not limited to: ball handling, offensive and defensive skills, passing, and general athletic ability. Various drills will be used to evaluate the players in these areas. Team skills include, but are not limited to: offensive and defensive skills in a team environment, court awareness and decision making, passing ability and overall competitiveness. 3-on-3 and 5-on-5 scrimmages will be used to evaluate the players in these areas.

Players are encouraged to remember that basketball is a team sport, and team selection is not based on points scored. During the tryout process, evaluators will be looking for players who possess the basic fundamentals of basketball, rather than a player that scores the most baskets.

Team Selection Process
It is the intent of the GBA Competitive Program to avoid excluding players if possible. The program's goal is to field competitive teams by placing players on a team where they will find individual success and continue to develop as a player. It is anticipated that there will be multiple teams at each grade level. The team roster size may not be less than 8 players or more than 10 players, unless approved by GBA.

2018-2019 Competitive Program Tryout Schedule

Please note: Even if your child is not able to attend the actual tryout, they must register for tryouts in order to be placed on a competitive team.

Your child must try out for the grade they will be in during the 2018-2019 school year.
