Fundamental League

The Gretna Basketball Association strives to provide opportunities for personal growth and development of youth athletes while promoting positive influences, confidence and the desire to excel on and off the court. The GBA is dedicated to educate and motivate each participant while encouraging teamwork, sportsmanship and fun through the spirit of basketball competition.

The GBA Fundamental League is for 1st - 6th Grade Gretna Public Schools students, and other children is these grades who live within the Gretna School District.  Our 1st and 2nd grade league is our introductory program designed to introduce players to the rules of the game and begin fundamental skill development.  The 3rd through 6th grade program is a recreational program designed for players who are new or continuing to develop their basic basketball skills, as well as those who may not have the time to participate in the competitive Club and Select programs due to participation in other activities.

The League has two seasons, Fall and Winter.  The Fall season runs from late October to December and the Winter session runs from mid-January to the end of February.  Each season is comprised of 6 sessions, taking place on Saturdays at local Gretna schools.  Each session begins with a 20 minute practice followed by a game.  1st and 2nd graders will complete the practice and game in 60 minutes with 3rd through 6th graders completing the practice and game in 75 minutes.  The Fall and Winter seasons are separate registrations and players can registerer for either or both seasons.

Fall 2021 Session

Registration for our Fall 2021 Fundamental session will open by September 11th (closing in early October).  The session is scheduled to take place October 23rd through December 11th (two weeks off November 20th and 27th), but remains subject to change per guidance from Gretna Public Schools.  We are working through our safety plan for the session, and expect the league to look different than in past years.  Examples of changes include, but may not be limited to: limitation on spectators (likely only 1-2 per player), time between games to empty the gym and sanitize equipment, shorter sessions for the 3rd-6th grade teams, no end of season tournament for 3rd-6th graders, potential for maximum registration limits.  Our goal is for as many of our youth to have a basketball season and we are working to ensure that it can be done safely for the players, spectators, workers, and schools.

Sessions Conclude with an End of Season Tournament!
